General information on EMAS - Who can participate in EMAS?

EMAS is open to any organization from all sectors – from small to large companies, national and regional government institutions as well as international corporations. The organization can decide itself whether to join EMAS as a whole organization, or just partially, e.g. as one of the company’s branch organizations. EMAS can be adjusted both to the business activities and the organization’s structure. EMAS is not only coherent with international ISO 14001 standard but also puts additional requirements related to active involvement of personnel, adjusting the activities to legal regulations and general transparency of performance. The system provides a clear picture of activities which helps to assign the tasks, monitor the activities and exchange the information between the stakeholders.

Participation in EMAS is voluntary. The system is open to all companies, public sector institutions and private sector (large companies, small and medium size enterprises, service companies, universities, schools etc.) who systematically identify environmental aspects, develop and implement plans that enable them to continuously reduce their environmental impact. For organizations that are ISO 14001 certified , implementation of EMAS requires only little additional efforts, but constitute a logical step forward.
